Phalla’s story

Phalla is the third child out of four siblings.

Four years ago, one of her brothers had an accident and broke his arm so they had to sell their land to pay for the hospital bill and went to live in a rented house. The whole family was dependent on the father’s construction worker’s salary, only 6 dollars a day. Even though daily living was hard, her father was determined to send his kids to school. He wanted all his children to finish high school at least.

Because of the worsening family situation, Phalla was sent to live with her grandma in the province in a very small wooden house at the age of 15.

“Even when I was living in the province and the school was far away, I was determined to walk to school because I wanted to finish high school. I had a dream to become a high school teacher if possible so that I am able to lift up my family situation. One day I met someone who told me about Flame. I applied and was accepted. I realized then that something great is going to happen in my life.”

The opportunity she was given meant she could go to university which was just a dream for her and her parents. They never thought could be achieved. With the support from Flame, her life has changed dramatically; physically, emotionally, and also financially.

Besides the bachelor’s degree she graduated with, she has four years of experience in university that has improved her discipline and developed a strong character. She has overcome procrastination and has learned what it takes to reach her goals.

She now has a well-paid job as a teacher in one of the international schools in Phnom Penh. She is able to support herself and her family for their daily needs. Her family is not living in a rented house anymore, they have once again bought their own land and house.

Even though she hasn’t yet reached her dream job, she is on the way.
